Administration Reveals Federal Worker Layoffs as Funding Gap Nears Three-Week Mark

The White House confirmed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s process for letting employees go.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services used by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the moves in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver essential functions to the public across the country,” stated a national union president, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have declined to support a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be ended before then.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, military personnel, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, unions sought a court injunction to prevent the government from carrying out any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge ordered the administration to provide specifics on layoff plans, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been brought back to carry out staff reductions.

A report contended that a funding lapse restricts the ability of the administration to carry out firings, citing guidance that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the funding expired.

Impact on Workers

These terminations occurred on the same day that federal workers got only a incomplete payment covering the final days of September but excluding the start of the current month, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the month.

Max Stier, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate said. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid amid the funding gap.
