Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at both ends of pitch

Following a drab weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on goal, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.
